Volleyball Hitting Percentage Calculator
Enter kills, errors, and total attempts to get a volleyball hitting percentage the same way scorekeepers do: (kills − errors) ÷ attempts. We'll also tell you what the number means.
Kills + errors + zero-attacks (0 attacks = ball kept in play, no kill/error).
Enter total attempts to calculate.
How hitting percentage works
Hitting percentage (also called attack percentage or hitting efficiency) is the standard measure of how efficiently a player or team attacks. The formula subtracts errors from kills and divides by every attack attempt:
Because errors are subtracted, a big-swinging hitter who also makes a lot of mistakes can have a lower percentage than a steady one — the stat rewards efficiency, not just kills. Middle blockers, who take high-percentage sets close to the setter, typically post the highest numbers on a team.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you calculate hitting percentage in volleyball?
- Hitting percentage is (kills − errors) ÷ total attempts. For example, 10 kills, 3 errors, and 25 attempts gives (10 − 3) ÷ 25 = .280. It is written to three decimals with the leading zero dropped.
- What counts as a total attempt?
- A total attempt is any time a player attacks the ball: it includes kills, hitting errors, and "zero attacks" (an attack that is dug or returned without a kill or an error). Serves, blocks, and free balls are not attack attempts.
- What is a good hitting percentage?
- It varies by level and position. As a rough guide, .300 or higher is excellent and typical of strong college attackers, .200–.299 is efficient, .100–.199 is a common club range, and below .100 means errors are cancelling out kills. Middle blockers usually post higher percentages than outside hitters.
- Can hitting percentage be negative?
- Yes. If a player records more errors than kills over a set of attempts, their hitting percentage is negative — for example 2 kills, 5 errors, and 20 attempts is (2 − 5) ÷ 20 = -.150.
