Volleyball Recruiting Timeline
College volleyball recruiting has a rhythm. Pick a graduation year and see exactly what to focus on each season — from your first highlight video to signing day — including the date coaches can finally call.
Freshman year (2025–26)
Build the foundation
Focus on skills, get playing time on a strong club team, and protect your grades from day one — core-course GPA counts. Start a highlight reel and create a simple recruiting profile.
Sophomore year (2026–27)
Research and get on film
Build a target list that fits athletically and academically, keep your highlight video current, and attend camps or showcases at schools you like. You can email coaches now even before they can reply.
June 15, 2027
D1 & D2 coaches can start contacting you
For most sports including women’s volleyball, NCAA Division I and II coaches may begin direct recruiting communication (calls, texts, emails, off-campus contact) on June 15 after sophomore year. Have your questions and highlight video ready.
Junior year (2027–28)
Visits, testing, and your short list
Take unofficial and official visits, narrow your list, and sit for the SAT/ACT if your targets use it. Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. This is when most Division I commitments take shape.
Senior year (2028–29)
Decide and sign
Finish official visits, make your decision, and sign. The National Letter of Intent early signing period for volleyball typically opens in mid-November of senior year, with a regular period after. Confirm current dates with the NCAA.
General guidance, not compliance advice. NCAA recruiting rules and signing dates change — verify specifics at the NCAA Eligibility Center (eligibilitycenter.org) and with each program.
How the recruiting calendar works
The single most important date to understand is June 15 after sophomore year. For most NCAA Division I and II sports, that's when coaches can begin direct recruiting communication. Everything before it is about being ready — strong film, a target list, and camps — so that when the gate opens, coaches already know who you are.
After that, the process compresses fast: visits and testing in junior year, decisions and signing in senior year. Division III, NAIA, and junior-college programs run on a more flexible, often later timeline, and can communicate with recruits earlier.
Frequently asked questions
- When can college volleyball coaches start contacting recruits?
- For NCAA Division I and II, coaches in most sports — including women’s volleyball — may begin direct recruiting communication on June 15 after a recruit’s sophomore year. Before that date, recruits can email coaches and attend camps, but coaches generally cannot respond with recruiting communication. Division III, NAIA, and junior colleges are not bound by that date and can talk earlier.
- What year should I start the recruiting process?
- Start building the foundation as a freshman: play for a strong club, protect your core-course GPA, and put together a highlight video. Serious outreach and research ramp up sophomore year so you’re ready the moment coaches can respond.
- When do most volleyball players commit?
- Many Division I commitments come together during junior year, with signing in senior year. The National Letter of Intent early signing period for volleyball typically opens in mid-November of senior year. Lower divisions often recruit later, into senior year.
- Do I need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center?
- Yes, if you want to compete at an NCAA Division I or II school. Register at the NCAA Eligibility Center (eligibilitycenter.org) — typically around junior year — so your academic and amateurism status can be certified.
